Hi! I was trying to install Windows Vista on my PC. Everything went well till the step which should install the updates. How I understood it, the PC should restart after having installed the updates, but I only get a message which should more or less be like this: "Error: setup failed to reboot your computer into the next step". I was trying to install Vista on a new partition, keeping my old WinXP Pro on another one. One more thing: after getting that error message, setup undoes all changes made during installation progress. But when I try to boot my old WinXP system, I only get the following message: "NTLDR is missing". I found a way to fix that, but I thought it is worth telling. Any help would be really appreciated! Thanks a lot!

Rebooting Error
This won't be much help but I get the exact same error. I'm running an ASUS A8N5X (nF4) and installing on a clean 40GB partition of a clean 80GB IDE drive. I've tried loading drivers (and not) in the setup but it doesn't make a difference. I have to hit F8 to boot my SATA WinXP now. I'll keep trying. Let me know if you find a solution.

I relpied last night that I was having the same problem but could not find a solution. I formatted and installed again last night (fifth time) and got the same error, again. So I gave up and went to bed. I got up this morning, turned on the computer and jumped in the shower. When I came out, the Vista install had continued!!!! Talk about weird. I did nothing. To say the least I am very confused, and a wee bit happy that it finally worked. Unfortunately I don't know why because I did NOTHING. Obviously this won't help you but I thought I'd let you know anyhow. Good luck.

Hi from Luca, Italy. Just the same things happened to me for 3 times... and the best came when I turned off my pc and restarted it: XP was safe, untouched, it booted without any trouble. I hoped the Vista installation could reprise (as oPURT writes) but I realized soon that all the Vista files had been wiped off just after the Installer promped that damned error message... Maybe I missed the "shower step" mentioned by oPURT :-)))

I didn't get the NTLDR message but despite killing any unnecessary processes and stuff like that, every attempt to install Vista results in the failed reboot error. There doesn't seem to be an installation log (that I've seen yet) and nothing is being captured by the event logs.

I had the exact same problem on both of my computers. After doing a rescan of my HP Pavilion ZV5255us I found that even though it originally was a successful candidate for upgrade that now my video card is not compatible. I tried my Compaq Presario 2400 which is newer and everything tested out okay. I purchased the DVD to install but after going through the loooooooooong process of loading files and installing them I get the same boot error message. I'm realizing that I am lucky that I can't install it, but wish I could get my money back.

To add insult to insult there was an error to my original reply to state that I am having the same problem, but with no partitioning, just upgrade to original Windows XP on Compaq Presario 2400.

Okay I am back again. I fixed the problem.
I have 2 HDD. 1x IDE and 1x Serial ATA booting from a controller (promise fasttrak TX2300) What I have done is: Disable the power from the IDE disk and after a new installation it worked.
So use only 1 disk for the installation...
After rebooting completing the installation I connected the power IDE cable again.
No problems anymore, but its A BUG...

I have also had this problem with a single blank 80Gb IDE drive nothing but the DVD drive connected. Did you try not installing the updates??
Is it worht trying to install from a fresh win xp install on the disk first?
Thanks for any help

I would try a fresh installation with only 1 partition (disk 0) Yes I installed the update because this test machine is hanging on the local network domain.
But I don’t know if it will work if you disconnect the LAN function when installing Vista.
Missing the NTLDR is because you installed it on the second partition from the first disk and it will to try to boot from the first disk partition but this on is not available because you installed it on the second partition of the first disk.
So clean installation on the first disk, fist partition.
Hopefully it helped a little this information..
